Gain a new perspective from our off-grid wilderness location - where less is more.
Iron Mountain Wilderness Cabins is a completely off-grid facility. You will notice that there are no power lines or phone lines as you climb up the mountain. The paved road turns to dirt, the forest closes in around you, as you ascend 270 meters to the mountaintop and your destination. (There is cell phone service available at our location - service can vary depending on your carrier/provider).
Pulling in through the gate, you have arrived at our 100% off-grid wilderness lodge and basecamp. Open to guests, members, and for events and workshops, Iron Mountain Lodge is Nova Scotia's only off-grid pub! The lodge is the heart of our facility and where guests check-in, access water, restrooms and showers. The lodge is licensed for food and beverage service.
Our off-grid cabins are a short walk away from the lodge and are outfitted for a great night's sleep - each has a comfy, pillow-top, queen sized bed and two single bunk beds. For more details about our cabins, please click here.
Our main lodge is fully serviced, thanks to our solar system and backup generator, overlooking beautiful southern views of Whycocomagh Bay and Denys Basin, you can see the mainland and four other counties from here on a clear day.
Our facility is perfect for small workshops, corporate retreats, and unique events. You may book the whole facility for these purposes. Please see our facility rentals page for more details about what we can offer for your event. We can arrange for catering and refreshments, a projector and screen, white boards, musical entertainment, guided tours and more.
Two multi-use recreational trails cross our acreage - The TransCanada Trail and the SANS 104 Cape Clear Snowmobile Trail. There are literally hundreds of kilometres of trails to explore in summer and winter from the TransCanada Trail/SANS Cape Clear Trail by ATV, snowmobile, dirt bike, mountain bike, and hiking. Two wilderness areas are accessible from the trails up here on the Keppoch Plateau. Trails connect us to Baddeck, Margaree, Lake Ainslie, River Denys Mountain, Inverness, Mabou, Port Hood, and so many more destinations! Join a guided side-by-side off road tour from our facility!
Our location is also an excellent retreat space for artists, photographers, writers and outdoor enthusiasts of all descriptions. It is a perfect place to unplug from the modern hustle of urban life and reconnect to nature and be grounded. We think most people will benefit from spending time in hardwood mountain forests, under the wide open mountain sky, of the quiet wilderness surrounding us.
Centrally located on Cape Breton Island, you can venture off on day trips in every direction from Iron Mountain Wilderness Cabins.
